History

The inaugural Meeting of the Wroughton Workmen’s Club was held in the Saddle Room of The Mill House, Perry’s Lane on the 4th Day of February 1895 so from that day forth there has been a ‘Wroughton Club’ playing an important role at the heart of the Community for over 130 years.

The Club registered as a Public Mutual on 19th March 1895 and continues to be registered with the FCA under the Friendly Societies Act (1974).

The Club also registered with the CIU from its inauguration in 1895 up until May 2021 when withdrawal from the CIU was passed by the Members, (at the 2020 AGM).

Friendly Society’s were formed by people coming together for a common financial or social purpose and before modern insurance and the welfare state friendly societies provided financial and social services to individuals, and to this present day the social side is paramount with the Wroughton Club being central to hosting Sports such as Darts, Skittles, Pool, Crib,  and Community Clubs and events such as Bingo, Quizzes, Fund Raising, Charity Events, Family Parties and celebrations etc. All in a convivial setting with the Bars serving drinks at keenly competitive ‘Member’ prices!!

The Club occupied a premises on Brimble Hill until 1928 when it moved to its current location on Devizes Road, into what was then a converted garage. The club operated from this old premises until 1994 when it was decided to build a new premises on the same site to include Accommodation, separate upstairs Function Room (accessible by both stairs and Lift), Air-Conditioning throughout and generally a modern premises to allow the club to build on its loyal membership and take it into the 21st century, whilst still retaining its appeal in its pivotal role in the community.
